It takes incredible determination and effort to make that. ![]() ![]() Part One - Weight Loss“When a person has nothing to eat, fasting is the smartest thing he could do.” – Herman Hesse. It’s making (non- caloric) lemonade out of lemons, and for all the transcendental insights contained in Hesse’s book, this line strikes me as a really cool, no- nonsense way to make the best out of a bad situation. But how useful is it, really, to today’s readers? Very few of us ever have “nothing to eat.” On the contrary, food is ever at our beck and call, with very little effort required to obtain it. Actually, that’s not completely true. Processed junk and fast food is readily available, while the good stuff – fresh meat and veggies, actual, you know. But the main point stands: we rarely go without. That doesn’t mean the quote is useless. ![]() In fact, with a few slight modifications, it becomes extremely effective weight loss advice. Check out my version: “When a person has had too much to eat, fasting is the smartest thing he could do.” – Mark Sisson. Back in 1. 96. 5, an obese Scotsman of 2. Department of Medicine in Dundee, Scotland, with a problem. He needed to lose weight. A (1/8 of a) ton of it. The doctors suggested maybe not eating for a few days could help. It was just an offhand recommendation, but our Scotsman (known only as “AB”) really took to it. ![]() ![]() ![]()
He stayed at the hospital for several days, taking only water and vitamin pills while undergoing observation to ensure nothing went wrong. When his time was up, he continued the fast back at home, returning to the hospital only for regular monitoring. After a week, he was down five pounds and feeling good. ![]() His vitals checked out, blood pressure was normal, and though he had lower blood sugar than most men, he didn’t seem particularly impaired by it. The experiment continued. All told, he lost 2. ![]() So even though you lose weight in the short term, it makes your body want to GAIN weight. Over the five following years of observation, AB regained just sixteen pounds, putting him in excellent, but underpopulated territory (at least 8. Other doctors paid attention. Maybe it was the fact that it was the 6. Vietnam, Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters blazing across the U. S. Study after study shows that whatever you want to call the protocol – intermittent fasting, fasting, alternate day fasting, or alternate day caloric restriction – it works very well for weight loss. A few recent ones: So, yes: it works. Obviously, when you don’t eat anything, your body turns to its own stored energy reserves, reserves that take up physical space and have mass. Depletion of those energy stores reduces mass and thus weight. Total and absolute caloric restriction. That’s elementary stuff and the studies from the 1. To dig a bit deeper, let’s look at how weight loss occurs during a fast. I’ll stick to research involving humans only (sorry, rodent personal trainers). Secretion of growth hormone, one of the premier. A later study showed that during two- day fasting sessions. They experienced more frequent GH bursts and each burst secreted a higher mass of GH. Without lipolysis actually releasing stored body fat, it’s rather difficult to, well, burn that body fat for energy. This insulin- blunting aspect of fasting quite literally allows the fast to be successful, because without the ability to access stored body fat for energy, making it through a period of zero caloric intake will be nigh impossible. Fasting improves insulin sensitivity. Both catecholamines increase resting energy expenditure during a fast, and guess where your fasting body finds the energy to expend? This makes intuitive sense, doesn’t it? If you’re hungry in the wild, you need to hunt (or gather, or fish, or somehow procure food) and you need energy to do it. The catecholamines help provide some of that energy while burning fat in the process. Hmm, notice anything? All those mechanisms dealt with fat burning specifically. While there may be some weirdo out there who’s interested in reducing bone mineral density and muscle mass while maintaining fat tissue, I would wager that what most people mean by “weight loss” is “fat mass loss.” From the stuff I just linked, it looks like fasting burns fat, rather than just weight.? Is it true? Let’s go to the research: In one. Weight didn’t change, which isn’t really surprising, but body composition did change – and for the better. Body fat decreased and lean weight increased (in addition to a bunch of other beneficial changes) without an overall reduction in calories. A. That really isn’t in contention here, folks. Even AB, the fasting Scotsman, reported very little difficulty throughout his 3. If fasting is easier for you than trying to laboriously count calories, fasting is going to be the more effective weight – er, fat – loss method. All in all, fasting is an effective way to lose body fat. It’s not the only way, and it isn’t “required” for Primal weight loss, but many in the community have found it to be very helpful and the literature backs them up. If you’re looking to jumpstart your fat loss, fasting may be just the ticket. To get some ideas, be sure to check out my post on various fasting methods. In subsequent installments, I’ll highlight some of the other benefits of fasting. There are a ton, and new research is being released all the time, so I expect I’ll have a lot to discuss. You’ll be taken to the word highlighted within the text, and each successive stroke of the Enter key will take you to the next point where the word is mentioned. Make sure that you're ready to make permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons. To stay committed to your weight loss, you need to be focused. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. So as you're planning new weight- loss- related lifestyle changes, make a plan to address other stresses in your life first, such as financial problems or relationship conflicts. While these stresses may never go away completely, managing them better should improve your ability to focus on achieving a healthier lifestyle. Once you're ready to launch your weight- loss plan, set a start date and then — start. Find your inner motivation. No one else can make you lose weight. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself. What's going to give you the burning drive to stick to your weight- loss plan? Make a list of what's important to you to help stay motivated and focused, whether it's an upcoming beach vacation or better overall health. Then find a way to make sure that you can call on your motivational factors during moments of temptation. Perhaps you want to post an encouraging note to yourself on the pantry door, for instance. While you have to take responsibility for your own behavior for successful weight loss, it helps to have support — of the right kind. Pick people to support you who will encourage you in positive ways, without shame, embarrassment or sabotage. Ideally, find people who will listen to your concerns and feelings, spend time exercising with you or creating healthy menus, and who will share the priority you've placed on developing a healthier lifestyle. Your support group can also offer accountability, which can be a strong motivation to stick to your weight- loss goals. If you prefer to keep your weight- loss plans private, be accountable to yourself by having regular weigh- ins, recording your diet and exercise progress in a journal, or tracking your progress using digital tools. Set realistic goals. It may seem obvious to set realistic weight- loss goals. But do you really know what's realistic? Over the long term, it's best to aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds (0. Both had an amazing transformations. Erika and her hubby would do these at- home workouts together and it looked like so much fun! I also knew Tara from the blog world (wortheveryounce). And then I started following another person, and then another, and another and they all used Beachbody products. Someone even sent me a sample of Shakeology once. I thought it was SO nasty because it wan't sweet enough (now I'm rolling my eyes at myself). But even though I saw the personal success (each of them!), the transformations AND the fact that they all had thriving businesses, I always looked at them and didn't believe I could actually pull that off. So I continued to follow all of them on social media. And even several more! And I could see the continued personal results. But I could also see other things. One person I follow QUIT HER JOB and offers Beachbody full time. Another person, a stay at home mom, was just able to buy a new home because she had earned so much with her business they paid off all their debt. I continuously saw weight loss and maintenance. I always saw success. But what I didn't see is them SELLING anything at all. Their posts never looked like an infomercial for a product. I needed a change. I wanted to work at home. I signed up with Mary Kay in October and knew after a few months that wasn't it. I LOVE makeup, but it wasn't my passion. What IS my passion? I asked myself that a million times. And as I stated in my last blog post, at some point after finding success with Keto this year, and becoming more active on social media, and actually trying to teach and HELP people with the knowledge I'd acquired.. It's helping people become the best, most healthy version of themselves. It's allowing people to use me as a source of inspiration and motivation and accountability! Through helping others, I help myself. It fills me in a way that I've never been filled before. While typing this I just got an amazing text from someone I've met on social media (through my Like page) and that is also now doing keto. She has already lost a lot of weight and inches! It's such great news and I just had to smile from ear to ear. I was an example for her. And now she is getting healthy and leading her family by example. Yes, she is doing the hard work. But I feel so happy inside getting to watch her transformation!!! A month or so ago, the whole stay- at- home- wife- and- entrepreneur- mom thing started rolling through my brain again. It's summer, and instead of staying home with my kids, I went out and got a summer job. Yes, it was easy and fun and the pay was great. But I missed the summer with my kids. I only have two kids left at home. And they are turning into mini adults. Time is flying. And it got me thinking.. What happened to my dreams? My plans of being a work from home mom? What could I do that would allow me to do something I'm passionate about AND make enough money that I could accomplishing that goal? One morning a few weeks ago as I was pondering this on my way to work, I ran across a podcast by Chalene Johnson. If you don't know who she is, then shame on you. But she is the instructor on several Beachbody programs (Turbo. Jam, Piyo..). I had subscribed to her podcast back in May (I think) because she had someone on her show talking about a low carb, high fat diet and lifestyle. So on this day, I was searching for something to listen to on my long ride to work and came across one of her shows on personal branding that REALLY got me thinking. The answer was in my face this whole time. It's a reputable company. EVERYONE knows about their products (duh, infomercials!) They are a leader in health and wellness. It's a brand I already trusted. I came home that evening and started following Chalene. Then I started going back and stalking everyone I follow on social media that's affiliated with Beachbody. I contacted my own Beachbody coach and started hammering her with questions. Her response.. You just haven't made it official. After we moved, I knew I'd have space to workout at home and thought Pi. Yo would be a good way to start. But it was more challenging than I expected. I did the first three days and it started collecting dust. BUT, I was ready to give it another try. After the first or second workout, Chalene started talking about Shakeology after a workout segment. Since going keto, I've been plagued by chronic constipation and hair loss. The reviews stated that Shakeology helped with BOTH. Definitely higher in carbs than I would have liked, but it actually looked like a good meal replacement. I could pronounce all the ingredients and it was (in my opinion) clean! So I ordered a sample pack. So quietly, I tried it for a week. I only told a few people because LORD HAVE MERCY I didn't want the negativity. I adjusted my carbs (eliminating most of my dairy and my daily servings of pecans) so I could still keep my carbs around 2. And within TWO days I was having daily bowel movements. AND my hair stopped shedding. Now, my hair had already decreased shedding significantly, but while drinking Shakeology it STOPPED. And it wasn't a fluke. Because after being OFF Shakeology for three days I'm already back to not having BM's at all. The Shakeo didn't make me bloat or have cravings. I was still able to maintain ketosis. And so did I. So, after all the research on the company. And being a guinea pig for the product. And actually doing one of the workout programs and seeing progress, and being excited about doing a few more (Cize!) I was ready to pull the trigger. But I was still scared. Until on Saturday morning and I logged on to Instagram and saw this picture. This picture is 2. Broadway downtown. I went to high school on Broadway. I know that area well. And to see THIS MANY PEOPLE working out, changing their lives, and so committed to a company.. This is where I'm supposed to be. It will be with the help of this company that I get to earn a living doing what I love to do. And it will also be through this company that I will finally realize my own weight loss and fitness goals. With the combination of my own knowledge of the ketogenic and low carb diets, and with the training and resources that Beachbody provides on clean eating and portion control, I can help SO many people. And I can also participate in and offer fitness programs to fit ANYONE's style and needs. Fitness that can be done from the comfort of your own home (no more driving to the gym or packing a workout bag). Someone commented on my last post that she hopes I don't turn my blog into just posts about product sales. Never will. What you will continue to see is my progress. More about my eating plan. And if you see something that interests you, you can contact me! I'm not a sales person and don't want to be one. But I will help you reach your goals. With or without you purchasing products from me. Because that's what I do. It's what I believe God put me here for. All the starts and stops. All the struggle with gaining and losing weight. All the damage I've done to my body. I see now that it was all part of a bigger plan. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. And now I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. My story, my testimony, will help others. I want us all to transform. Two Meals a Day Are Ideal. By Dr. Mercola. How many meals a day is ideal? There are many answers to this question, but if you want to optimize your lifespan and decrease your risk for developing chronic degenerative diseases, the answer is becoming very clear. Other less obvious risks are biological changes that result in metabolic dysfunction, subsequent weight gain, and diminished health. In fact, a number of beneficial effects take place when you go for periods of time without eating. Valter Longo,1 director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California, where he studies meal timing and calorie restriction, even three meals a day may be too much. As reported by Time Magazine: 2. They often look only at the short- term effects of increasing meal frequency. While your appetite, metabolism, and blood sugar might at first improve, your system will grow accustomed to your new eating schedule after a month or two. When that happens, your body will start expecting and craving food all day long instead of only around midday or dinnertime. More recently, I have refined my views on skipping breakfast. The key to remember is to only eat within a window of six to eight consecutive hours each day, and avoiding food for at least three hours before bedtime. As long as you restrict your eating to this window, you can choose between having breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner, but avoid having both breakfast and dinner. I have recently appreciated that this is another important factor that can help optimize your mitochondrial function and prevent cellular damage from occurring, which I'll review in the next segment. That said, none of this probably applies to normal weight teens or growing children. They likely need three square meals a day unless they're overweight. For kids and teens, the type of food they eat would be a primary consideration. Ideally, all of their meals would revolve around eating REAL FOOD — not processed foods, fast food, and sugary snacks. Drinking plenty of pure water and avoiding sugary beverages is another key consideration. This is due to the way your body produces energy. Many don't realize that your mitochondria are responsible for . Your cells have between 1. When you don't have insulin resistance this energy transfer works quite nicely, but when you are insulin resistant or you eat excessively, dysfunctions tend to emerge. These excess electrons leak out and wind up prematurely killing the mitochondria, and then wreak further havoc by damaging your cell membranes and contributing to DNA mutations. Simple: resolve your insulin resistance as soon as you can, and do not eat for AT LEAST three hours before you go to sleep. Personally I stop eating around 4 PM or even earlier and typically go to sleep around five to six hours later. This is one of the reasons why I now believe skipping dinner may be an even better strategy than skipping breakfast. Clearly skipping dinner is more difficult to implement from a social perspective, but it might be a superior biological strategy. Obese participants who . All participants, including the control group, received a weight management consultation on how to improve their diet and exercise. Those who ate three meals a day and drank water prior to each meal lost an average of nearly 9. Those who only pre- loaded once a day, or not at all, lost just over 1. In all, 2. 7 percent of the treatment group who pre- loaded with water lost more than five percent of their body weight, compared to just five percent of the control group. This makes logical sense, as thirst is often misinterpreted as hunger. Drinking water before settling down to eat will also make you feel fuller, so overall this strategy could result in eating less. Interestingly, research. So one reason why calorie restriction may lengthen lifespan appears to be due to the positive effect it has on gut microbiota. Earlier research has demonstrated that calorie restriction helps extend the lifespan of animals by improving insulin sensitivity and inhibiting the m. TOR pathway. This was demonstrated in a 2. Research included in that review, and other published studies, indicate that intermittent fasting can help: Limit inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and cellular damage Improve circulating glucose Reduce blood pressure Improve metabolic efficiency and body composition, including significant reductions in body weight in obese individuals Reduce LDL and total cholesterol levels Prevent or reverse type 2 diabetes, as well as slow its progression Improve immune function,1. Improve pancreatic function Improve insulin and leptin levels and insulin/leptin sensitivity Reproduce some of the cardiovascular benefits associated with physical exercise Protect against cardiovascular disease Modulate levels of dangerous visceral fat Boost mitochondrial energy efficiency Normalize ghrelin levels, known as . Fasting can raise HGH by as much as 1,3. HGH plays an important part in health, fitness, and slowing the aging process. It's also a fat- burning hormone Lower triglyceride levels and improve other biomarkers of disease Boost production of brain- derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), stimulating the release of new brain cells and triggering brain chemicals that protect against changes associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. For starters, it's a lot easier to comply with, and compliance is everything. The calorie restriction route is also extremely dependent on high quality nutrition — you want to sacrifice calories without sacrificing any important micronutrients — and this can be another hurdle for many who are unfamiliar with nutrition and what actually constitutes a healthy diet. Most people fail to appreciate that there are many intricate biochemical dynamics that occur that are unaccounted for when you just count . As pointed out by Fight Aging: 1. Thus only the mouse evolves a relatively large plasticity of life span in response to food scarcity. Ancel Keys demonstrated this in the mid- 1. Thirty- six young healthy male volunteers were placed on a 2. They also had to walk for about 4. But instead of resulting in continuous weight loss, at 2. The men became obsessed with food to the exclusion of everything else in their life, and when the calorie restriction ended, they all over- reacted. Within a few weeks, they regained all of the lost weight plus about 1. Other studies have come to similar conclusions. So starvation- type diets may not be ideal for the average person. Your body will tend to shut down various processes in order to survive. For example, by reducing thyroid function, your body will not burn as many calories. On the one hand, calorie restriction promotes beneficial biological changes that tend to extend life; on the other, there are built in mechanisms that when triggered by chronic calorie restriction can trigger other health problems. These are complex issues, and any extreme measure is likely to cause more problems than it solves. The best we can do is come up with some general guidelines that replicate ancestral patterns. In my view, daily intermittent fasting and avoiding eating for a number of hours before bedtime has many advantages over general calorie restriction and other radical diets, while providing many of the same benefits with a minimum of risk. It's important to recognize that, with few exceptions, you cannot burn body fat if you have other fuel available, and if you're supplying your body with carbohydrates every few hours, your body has no need to dive into your fat stores. When you apply intermittent fasting you not only avoid this but also will typically decrease your food costs and increase your health. If you're not insulin resistant, intermittent fasting is not as crucial, but may still be beneficial. If you're among the minority of Americans who do not struggle with insulin resistance, then my general recommendation is to simply avoid eating at least three hours before bedtime. That automatically allows you to . To that, I would add avoiding sitting, engaging in non- exercise movement throughout the day, and getting regular exercise. Exercise will not produce significant weight loss without addressing your diet, but when done in combination it can be significantly beneficial. Jay Alfred - What is the weight of the human soul ? Posted on Monday, 2. April, 2. 01. 1 . The Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, who lived in the sixth century BC, thought that the soul was composed of an unusually fine or rare kind of matter, such as air or fire. However, if it was material it had to have some weight. Barbara Brennan, former NASA engineer and now world- renowned energy healer, observes that . Robert Monroe also believes that the . The subtle body has often been loosely identified as the . This has motivated various researchers, including Noetic Science, to undertake experiments to weigh the soul. Duncan Mc. Dougall weighed six patients, while they were in the process of dying from tuberculosis. When death was imminent, the entire bed of the patient was quickly placed on a highly sensitive industrial sized scale. In each case, when the patient expired, he noticed an extremely small sudden change in the weight of the deceased which could not be accounted for by other means. The missing mass, which this weight loss represented, was used to support his hypothesis that the body had a soul which had mass. On the death of the visible body, the soul departed, and so did this mass. The weight of the soul, based on the average loss of mass in six patients, was measured by Mc. Dougall to be 2. 1 grams. A paper summarising his findings appeared in the journal American Medicine in 1. One critic quickly pointed out that the sphincter and pelvic floor muscles relax at death, and that the loss was perhaps due to ejected urine and/or faeces. Mc. Dougall rebutted that if this were the case, the weight would remain upon the bed and, therefore, upon the scale. Someone else suggested that the dying patients’ final exhalation might have contributed to the drop in weight. To disprove this, Mc. Dougall climbed into the bed and exhaled “as forcibly as possible” while his assistant watched the scale. No change was observed. Another critic reasoned that body weight was being continually lost as water escapes into the air through What is the Weight of the Human Soul? An Estimate Based on Dark Matter Statistics 7. NEW DAWN . 1. 5 www. Mc. Dougall claimed to have accounted for this also. His first patient, he wrote, lost water weight at the rate of an ounce per hour, far too slowly to explain the sudden threequarter- ounce (about 2. In the 1. 92. 0s, Dutch physicists Drs Malta and Zaalberg Van Zelst claimed that the (physical- etheric) subtle body is capable of expanding by 1. According to them, it was composed of “extremely small and widely separated” atoms and had a density of 1. The description that the . This and the observation that the body could expand and contract suggest that the subtle body was composed of low density plasma, which could vary its density to some extent. In 1. 98. 8, Noetic Science carried out experiments on the largest number of patients and concluded that the human soul weighs 1/3,0. The experiments were carried out by East German researchers who weighed more than 2. In each case the weight loss was exactly the same – 1/3,0. This is approximately 0. The expert’s report on these experiments, co authored by physicist Elke Fisher, was criticised by Gerard Voisart, a leading French pathologist, who said that the weight difference between the living and dead could be accounted for by air leaving the lungs. Fisher and Mertens pointed out that this was considered in their calculations. Furthermore, they argued that the device they used to weigh the . The only possible explanation is that we were measuring the loss of the human soul or some kind of life force.” Dr. Becker Mertens of Dresden claimed in the German science journal Horizon that the only logical conclusion is that the existence of the human soul had been confirmed and its weight determined. But our attempts to identify this energy have been unsuccessful to date.” This author’s Dark Plasma Theory, first published in 2. Duncan Mc. Dougall's (pictured left) experiments to discover the weight of the human soul. Special I www. newdawnmagazine. No. This view, which was new in 2. Minimal (dark) plasma cells developed in this . Over more than 4 billion years these first cells evolved into complex dark plasma life forms. Being plasma life forms they exhibit features commonly seen in ordinary standard plasma. Heraclitus was probably close to the mark when he hypothesised that the soul was composed of a rare . However, the reader should take careful note that these life forms are not composed of ordinary shortlived plasma but non- standard plasma composed of dark matter particles, which is invisible to most humans (just as dark matter is). Some of these life forms formed symbiotic relationships with members of the human species and co- evolved, integrating with the living carbon- based human body. On the death of the carbonbased bodies, the dark bioplasma bodies separate and return to their societies in the dark biosphere (i. Earth’s dark matter halo). It is these exotic life forms that are popularly called the . In order to estimate the density and weight of the . Dark Matter Density Around Earth The background galactic halo dark matter density is estimated to be about 5. Xu and Siegel, from the University of Arizona, estimated the mass of dark matter within the Solar System (between 0. AU and 1. 00 AU) to be 1. Earth mass) (AU=Astronomical Unit. This is a unit equal to the distance of the Earth from the Sun). The mass of dark matter within the orbit of Earth (i. The corresponding dark matter density was approximately 9. This is five orders of magnitude greater than the background galactic halo dark matter density. Xu and Sigel’s estimate that the dark matter density around Earth exceeds the galactic halo density significantly has been correlated by Stephen Adler from Princeton University. Anomalies relating to accelerations, observed during fly- bys of spacecraft orbiting the Earth, suggest that the dark matter density around Earth had been significantly understated (as suggested earlier by this author). According to Adler the magnitude of the observed anomalies requires dark matter densities many orders of magnitude greater than the galactic halo density. Adler suggested that by comparing the total mass of the Earth- Moon system (determined by lunar laser ranging) with the sum of the lunar mass (determined by its gravitational action on satellites or asteroids) and the Earth mass (determined by the LAGEOS geodetic survey satellite), a direct measure of the mass of Earth- bound dark matter lying between the radius of the Moon’s orbit and the geodetic satellite orbit can be obtained. Based on this, the mass of Earth- bound dark matter must be less than 4. For the dark matter mass within this volume not to exceed 4 . This is greater than the background galactic halo dark matter density by fourteen orders of magnitude. Based on the analyses above, it is reasonable to conclude that there exists a halo of dark matter particles around the visible component of the Earth within a An 1. Earth’s dark matter halo has been dubbed “Dark Earth” by the author and its attributes, based on the most recent estimates, compared to the visible Earth, are given below: Dark Earth Visible Earth Mass 2. Volume 1. 4. 4 . This approximates with the dimensional relationship between the volume of Jupiter’s huge gas envelope and its tiny rocky core (the latter approximates the volume of the visible rocky Earth). In other words, we would expect an envelope of dark matter particles the size of Jupiter around the visible component of the Earth with a mean density of 1. Weight of the Soul A man weighing 1. Based on a mean density of dark matter of 1. However, in lay language, this is often taken to be 1. Estimated Weight of the Soul: Based on Noetic Science Experiment 1. Based on Dark Matter Statistics 1. The weight of the soul, as measured in the Noetic Science experiment was 1. Considering that the dark matter estimate was the mean density, one should not expect a very close correlation. Bioplasma bodies may actually be denser than the surrounding environment (in the dark biosphere). The measurement in the Noetic Science experiment may also contain a certain percentage attributable to the weight of unaccounted ordinary matter. Looking at the broad picture, therefore, these estimates can be considered quite close. We hope that this finding will motivate further experiments to weigh the human soul using more sensitive scales in controlled settings. Siegel, (2. 00. 8) ar. Xiv: 0. 80. 6. 3. Adler, (2. 00. 8) ar.
